From the beginning of Gentlemen Prefer Mischief, I had a difficult time liking much less admiring the heroine, so it made it nearly impossible for me to understand why the hero was so enchanted with her.Lily is a serious minded woman who has had responsibility thrust upon her at an early age. She was caretaker to her younger sister and her father after her mother died. She is humorless and is described at one point in the book as a killjoy. That pretty much sums up her personality. Four years ago at the tender age of sixteen she had a crush on her neighbor Hal, a fun loving second son of a Viscount. Hal joined the Army, fought in Spain and returned to England after his brother died leaving him in charge of the estate.
Hal is intrigued by no nonsense prickly Lily and when she asks him to take care of a problem on his lands he takes the opportunity to challenge Lily's great restraint. He engages her in interesting conversations which are anything but shallow. However, Lily constantly thinks of Hal as incredibly superficial and a wastrel unworthy of respect and because he is so flighty and carefree Lily cannot respect herself for liking him.
Lily is in a word unfair. For most of this novel she is judgmental, hurtful and lashes out in anger. This author does portray the hero beautifully and his words are especially powerful in this story. He is not afraid to confront bossy Lily and tell her the truth about her own actions, which makes her frustrated and resentful. This woman barely smiles or laughs feeling that frivolity is well too frivolous. At times her words are beyond unkind to downright cruel, and just about unforgivable. Her actions remind me of the Bible verses in Corinthians that state without love we are nothing but a clanging symbol. Lily is a do gooder but not a great lover of people.
This story would only garner two stars but for the wonderful hero who bumps this up a notch. He is powerfully charismatic and charming (both vices in Lily's mind) and he is kind. He is not afraid to change though and I found this trait quite admirable. He is a good man and it takes Lily a very long time to see it.

Emily Greenwood's second book in the Regency Mischief series, Gentlemen Prefer Mischief, is out of the ordinary for Regency romances. With a plot device like haunted sheep, how could it be otherwise? This novel also features a prim and proper heroine who could use a little mischief of her own in her life. Greenwood's knack for character development is showcased here, when Lily is forced to acknowledge that she may have feelings for the Viscount next door. A good sophomore effort by an up and coming author!
What I liked
Contrary to what some readers enjoy. I liked Lily and her closed up, buttoned up ways. Part of the charm of this book, was Hal's teasing and bantering with her, to get her to come out of that proper lady shell. Greenwood let's Lily's character simmer under the surface, behind a lot of no-nonsense behavior and duty driven attitudes. But I had a feeling there was more to her than met the eye and Hal eventually finds it. Lily is a woman of contradictions and I enjoyed her a lot.
Hal, the Viscount Roxham was a true hero in my opinion. He may be a rake, but he's a rake with a conscience. He is a kind man, who understands his duty to his position and family, but he doesn't turn it inward like Lily has done. He is outspoken and boisterous and I understood how he was so enchanted with Lily, she was completely opposite of what the reader thought this kind of man would want. It was a great idea and for me it worked.
Who doesn't love some outrageousness, especially in a Regency romance? The ton is so full of rules and regulations and this must be that way and that must be this way's. I thought the haunted sheep and the reason behind them was a great idea. It brought the hero and the heroine together and it provided a back drop to their growing affection for each other. The fiend was certainly a very fun element to this story.
What I didn't like
Having read Greenwood's first book, I was excited to read this one. There were definitely some things I liked, but there were a few things that bothered me with this one as well. The pacing was off a bit. I couldn't put my finger on what the issue was for awhile but then I realized that there was just too much going on. I loved the story surrounding Hal and Lily, but the diversion into the the romance of Hal's sister was a merely a distraction that wasn't needed. Perhaps this was set up for the next book, but it took away some of the originality from this novel.
A wonderful, relaxing read with fabulous characters and beautiful prose. Greenwood’s detailed historical world made me feel as if I were walking along the same halls and gardens as the characters.
I've had this book on my reader for a while and just 'rediscovered' it. It's a little hard to get into as I found the plot a bit hokey, but about halfway in I started to enjoy the story.
Hal is the playful boy-next-door that Lily had a crush on when she was sixteen. Four years have passed and Hal is now the Viscount and a veteran of the Peninsular wars while Lily is running a secret knitting business to start a school for the girls in her village. She's very serious, especially when confronted by Hal's lighthearted teasing, but she fascinates Hal. I found Lily kind of prickly and not that likable, but Hal was definitely worth reading this book for. They do make a good couple once they both grow up some.
This is a quick read and I enjoyed the second half a lot. I was surprised by a subplot with Hal's sister and her romance. I expected that might be the next book in the series, but it seems to have been resolved here - I just wasn't sure why it got thrown in.
