True Kristen Ashley fans will purchase whatever she writes -- okay, maybe not the Honey series. I'm still having 'My Little Pony' nightmares. If you are a fan, like me, just keep your expectations in check when it comes to this book. This is not so much Complicated as Exaggerated. You have met Hix before when he was Mike Haines in Games of the Heart (Burg series). Both are recently divorced policemen in their 40's with horrible ex-wives. They are fabulous fathers, unbelievably handsome, and are frustrated by the impact their ex has on their current lives and how she is screwing up their kids. Other than a couple of foot in mouth stupid moments, Hix is nothing short of perfect. Greta is perfect, too. She has single-handedly raised her younger brother since she was 14 and is responsible for caring for him now that he is an adult with a traumatic brain injury. Greta is the Mother Theresa of hairdressers, is a professional singer, and is so stunning at age 38 that the local high school girls all swoon over her. I'm trying to think of any real teenagers who would think a non-celebrity adult so close to 40 is the epitome of all that is stylish and want to dress like her. Greta, of course, is so petite, that she can fit into her boyfriend's teen-aged daughter's clothes. Bwaaahaaa!

The secondary characters are caricatures as well. Shaw, at 17, has the maturity of a well-adjusted 40 year old. Greta's mother is ridiculously evil, think Wicked Witch of the West, and the two ex's are over the top as well. Greta's ex has piled financial resources on her to the tune of a house, paying for her brother's care and pretty much setting her up for the rest of her life. There is some confusion about this, though, as at one point, the owner of the nightclub is under the impression that Greta has the second job as a singer in order to pay for her brother's care and that she is struggling. Hix's ex is hard to relate to. She has the perfect husband and dumps him for the most ridiculous reason ever. When he begs her during the year of their separation to explain why she split up the family, she wants him to guess. The reason is nothing short of anti-climactic.

In addition to the exaggeration, there is the repetition that Ashley has become famous for. The old 'It was not fabulous. It was FABULOUS!' is alive and well.

"No good. Not good. Because it was good. It was unbelievably good." This little nugget was on the first page and had me eye-rolling right off the bat. Where are the editors and beta-readers to give an author feedback when they are over-using a particular writing technique? I noticed that another reviewer is exhausted by the whispering (whispered is used 153 times) and muttering (muttered 136 times) that the main characters, like many other Ashley has created, do throughout this book.

There are several sub-plots that seem to fizzle. Many references are made to the $25,000 inheritance that Hix has, leading us to believe that perhaps his ex has gotten her hands on this money and spent it which would surely lead to some interesting conflict. At least two minor characters ask Hix if he'll be needing that money to purchase a new home. Poof! Goes nowhere. Then we have Beckman, the meth entrepreneur who has an agreement with local police to sell his wares outside of the county. That had the potential to be a pretty big conflict and Poof! again. The gunman scenario is ludicrous. There is a good build up in terms of trying to track the mysterious killer down with the most arcane end to a man hunt I can remember.

So, over the top characters we have seen before, a plot that fizzles and the cringe-worthy terms of endearment. What was supposed to pass for humorous just felt lame. "Okeydokey, smokey." "Ten-four, good buddy." "You can take the smokey out of his late seventies cop car and slap him in a late nineties Bronco, but you can't take the smokey outta the smokey." WHAT?????

So why three stars instead of two? The sex scenes! I would venture to say that the main character is sex and that the main plot element is sex. There are a number of Ashley novels that I have read multiple times and have faves I like to reread yearly. This is a book that didn't make me sad when I finished it nor would I want to reread it.

Complicated edition by Kristen Ashley Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

I absolutely love KA... but her newer work seems formulaic at best. The last few H's could have all been the same man, just swap their names. It's unfortunate from such a talented author. This story never even had that edge-of-your-seat drama K does so well. I'm trying to remember which other story that was EXACTLY like this one, but seriously, most of them are. I doubt I'll remember this one next week. H meets h. He acts like a jerk, she gets attacked, she forgives him, he takes care of the villain; and they all lived happily ever after. Maybe I'm over simplifying, but if so, it's only because there was nothing different or memorable about this book. H wasn't even a great alpha. It was a good book, but it's like a book that I've read before. Several times. I miss KA circa Motorcycle Man and Knight. I think I will give her a pass for a while. All IMHO, of course.
I love almost all of KA books. I’m not a fan of her Honey Series and I’m not a fan of this one. I waited the 6mos and got it on kindle because I despise audiobooks. I’ve found with her last few books I have a hard time getting through them which never happened before with her. I was completely bored with this book. The excessive narrating from both main characters made my mind wander and before I knew it I’ve gone through 3 pages and I have no clue what I read. I want he old KA back! The one where I would hurt anyone who disturbed me while reading her books! I just am not so excited anymore for her stuff sadly. Maybe going the mainstream publishing route wasn’t a good move for her work.
I love KA books, my family would have to fend for themselves when I read her previous books namely the Man series and Rock Chicks even Chaos was not bad. Buuttt ...... the newer books I can’t bring myself to care, was hoping this one would show a bit of interest but sadly - NO. I got halfway through this book and could have quite happily deleted it, now that’s saying something but I stuck with it because, well it’s KA after all. I found it repetitive and boring , did not like the HA at all, actually none of the characters struck a cord with me. The book was just blah ! I think this will be the last KA book I buy for a long time. Sad to say but true 😩
Since K.A was such a hit for me with so many books, I keep buying her new books and ending up disappointed more so than not. This book is bad, terrible bad. There is no plot breaks and a lot of verbal and mindless detail filler that goes nowhere, and brings nothing but word court to the book. The author found great success with writing Alpha males, the problem is the voice never changes in her books, even the male speak is now the short female speak. In this book even the old ladies talked in half blunt sentences like an Alpha. The only reason we know the difference in characters is she is telling us whose talking, aside from that they verbally blur into each other. I have said before that I think she is a formula writer so all her books are very similar with different names and titles. The reason for the divorce is stupid and very unbelievable, the drag is long and hard, you can skip many pages and miss nothing. There is no build leading to the mysteries (a few too many) in this book, there is far too much going on but not enough good plotting or characters to pull it off. This book is run on rambling and likely the worst K.A book I have read to date. I don't know where she went with her writing skills, but I hope one day she returns.
